The Sacramento Kings are moving toward trading De’Aaron Fox, with the San Antonio Spurs emerging as the leading candidate to acquire the All-Star guard, according to Marc Stein. Fox has not formally requested a trade, but league sources indicate he is unwilling to commit to a long-term future in Sacramento.
The Kings reportedly initiated trade discussions by reaching out to Fox’s representation and signaling to teams last week that he was available. Sacramento’s decision comes after the 27-year-old turned down a three-year, $167 million extension last summer.
Fox initially gambled on earning All-NBA honors to become eligible for a supermax extension in 2025. However, Stein reported that he no longer plans to extend with the Kings, regardless of how this season unfolds.
With the February 6 trade deadline approaching, San Antonio has positioned itself as a preferred destination. Fox is reportedly interested in joining the Spurs to pair with Victor Wembanyama, but his camp has yet to publicly confirm those intentions.
San Antonio is actively searching for a franchise point guard and has the draft capital and young assets to negotiate a deal. The key question is whether the Spurs will accelerate their rebuild by trading for Fox now or wait for free agency in 2026.
Fox is averaging 25.1 points, 5 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in 37.1 minutes per game this season. He is currently in the fourth year of a five-year, $163 million contract.
Sacramento sits in 10th place in the Western Conference with a 24-23 record. The Spurs are further down in 12th at 20-24 but see Fox as a potential long-term fit alongside Wembanyama.
Other teams, such as the Brooklyn Nets, are expected to pursue Fox in the offseason when they have more roster flexibility and access to 2032 draft picks. However, Brooklyn is not considered a serious in-season suitor.
