Kyrie Irving has spoken out about the fallout from Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, urging for less public criticism surrounding the move.
During an interview with Malika Andrews, Irving addressed the way Mavericks management handled the situation and the backlash that followed. He emphasized the importance of maintaining respect despite the intense scrutiny from fans and media.
“For my own peace of mind—because we not only had two years together but got to know each other as men—I hope we can dial back some of the public criticism and really maintain the kindness and compassion we have for each other,” Irving said, via HoopsHype.
Doncic was traded to the Lakers on February 2, in a blockbuster deal that sent him, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The trade also involved the Utah Jazz, who acquired Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks.
The deal was one of the most shocking in NBA history, as it marked the first time two reigning All-NBA players were swapped midseason. Many questioned Dallas’ decision to move on from their 25-year-old superstar, while Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison defended the trade, stating, “I believe that defense wins championships.”
Doncic, who had recently purchased a $15 million house in Dallas, was reportedly blindsided by the move. Chandler Parsons revealed that the Slovenian guard was unaware of the trade until it was finalized.
The backlash against the Mavericks’ front office has been severe, with fans voicing their anger over parting ways with their franchise cornerstone. Harrison has been at the center of the criticism, facing public pressure and even threats following the deal.
Irving, who played alongside Doncic for nearly three years, acknowledged the emotional toll of the situation but stressed the importance of focusing on the human side of the business. “There were real relationships built behind the scenes that will transcend just basketball, coaching, and upper management,” he said.
The nine-time All-Star has now taken on a larger leadership role in Dallas, with the team looking to build around him and Davis. However, questions remain about the long-term direction of the franchise following the high-profile trade.
Meanwhile, Doncic has made an immediate impact with the Lakers, forming a dominant duo with LeBron James. In his first three games with Los Angeles, he has averaged 14.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists while team went 1-2.
